Commissioning records for installation contractors

Commissioning software for every product you install.

Commissioning proves each installed product works. Integrio gives every inverter, battery, charger and BMS controller its own test form, capturing serials, readings and signatures on site.

What is commissioning software?

Commissioning software is where installers record proof that an installed system works as intended: each product, where it is, its serial and settings, the tests run, the results and who signed them off. MCS solar PV installers must commission to a documented procedure and keep the forms used; the software holds that evidence but does not notify the DNO or building control.

Last updated . Facts checked on 30 September 2026 against MCS MIS 3002 Solar PV Systems, issue 6.0, MCS: Notifying DNOs (G98 and G99), Building Regulations 2010, regulation 44 and Approved Document L Volume 2, Section 8.

Why is commissioning evidence so hard to find?

Engineers test string by string, charger by charger and controller by controller, and the record should be complete when the last test passes. On most jobs the testing is done properly, but the evidence ends up split between a spreadsheet of serials, test instrument printouts, photos on three phones and a client signature on the back of a delivery note. When the client, the DNO paperwork or an insurer asks which inverter was tested, by whom and with what result, the answer takes a day to find.

Serials without a location

A list of inverter, battery and charger serials is little use at handover if nobody recorded which roof, plant room or parking bay each one ended up in.

Checks skipped under pressure

Paper tick sheets let a busy engineer move on with a blank box. Nobody notices until the client or the commissioning manager asks for it.

Retests that leave no trace

A string fails its test, a connector is re-made and it passes the next day, but only the final tick survives, so the record no longer explains what happened.

How do you run commissioning, from product list to sign-off?

01 · Load the equipment

Add the inverters, batteries, chargers or controllers for the project from your product library, or import them by CSV, with data points for serial, firmware and any other setting.

02 · Attach the right tests

Assign testing and commissioning forms to each product, with mandatory fields for the checks your plan or specification requires.

03 · Test on site

Engineers scan the product QR code, work through the form offline if needed, and add readings, photos and notes as they go.

04 · Sign off and hand over

Collect engineer and client signatures, then issue the record as a company branded report alongside the rest of the handover pack.

What should commissioning software do?

Commissioning is a list of products, each with a set of checks. Integrio keeps the checks on the product record, so every result stays tied to the thing it proves.

✓Product data points

Define fields such as serial number, firmware, rating, IP address or logins once, and they apply to every new product. Add custom fields per product type, such as string layout for an inverter.

✓Testing forms per product

Assign as many forms as you need to a product, such as testing, commissioning and sign-off forms, each built in the drag-and-drop form builder.

✓Mandatory fields before sign-off

Set mandatory fields on testing forms so every required check is completed and documented before project sign-off, and gaps show up on site rather than at handover.

✓Checks that fit the system

Conditional logic shows or hides questions based on earlier answers, so a PV inverter, an EV charger and a BMS controller each get their own checks.

✓Works on roofs and in plant rooms

Forms run offline in the mobile app. Data is saved on the device and syncs to the cloud once the connection is back.

✓Signed and branded records

Capture digital signatures on the device, require approval from several parties, and export company branded reports for the client.

What the rules say about commissioning solar PV, batteries and building services

Which rows apply depends on what you install. MCS rows cover certified solar PV installers (systems up to 50kWp DC); the Approved Document L rows cover fixed building services in buildings other than dwellings in England.

Building services: planOn larger jobs, a commissioning plan should identify the systems to test, the tests, the schedule, roles and documentation requirements, following CIBSE Code M with the CIBSE codes or BSRIA guides for each service.Approved Document L Vol 2, 8.4 and 8.6
Building services: noticeA notice goes to building control and the owner confirming the plan was followed and results reasonably match the design: within five days, or 30 days for competent person scheme work.Approved Document L Vol 2, 8.7 and 8.8; regulation 44

Integrio holds the forms, readings and signatures. The MCS registration, DNO notifications and building control notice stay with the installer responsible.

New 2026 editions of Approved Documents L and F apply from 24 March 2027, or from 24 September 2027 on higher-risk buildings, so confirm on GOV.UK which edition covers your project.

Frequently asked questions

What do installers ask about commissioning software?

Ask our team →

What should a commissioning checklist include?

+

At minimum: where the product is, what it is (make, model, serial), its settings, the pre-commissioning checks, each functional test and its result, any readings with units, what was done about failures, and who carried out and witnessed the tests. For building services, Approved Document L expects the tests and documentation to follow a commissioning plan that sets out the systems to test, the tests, the schedule, roles and documentation requirements. BSRIA publishes a model commissioning plan template (BG 8/2009).

How do you commission a solar PV system?

+

Under MCS MIS 3002 (issue 6.0), the system is commissioned to a documented procedure and inspected and tested to Section 16 of the IET Code of Practice for Grid Connected Solar PV Systems. The Standard reproduces BS EN 62446-1 test reports, which record each string's module count, open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current, polarity, insulation resistance, and isolator and inverter checks. Copies of the forms used go in the customer's document pack. In Integrio, build those rows into a testing form attached to each inverter.

Does Integrio issue MCS Certificates or notify the DNO?

+

No. Integrio keeps the checks, results and signatures and turns them into a branded report. MCS registration and certificates, G98 notifications and G99 applications to the DNO, and the regulation 44 notice to building control all stay with the installer responsible. For G98 solar, MCS says the DNO must be notified within 28 days of commissioning. Your commissioning manager or engineer still leads the process, and the CIBSE codes and BSRIA guides named in your plan still set the procedure. Integrio is where the evidence lives.

Can we use it for BMS commissioning?

+

Yes. BMS teams can record controllers, sensors and other equipment as products with their locations and data points, and attach forms for point checks, setpoints and functional tests. The Building Regulations define fixed building services to include the controls associated with heating, hot water, air conditioning, mechanical ventilation and fixed lighting, so BMS work on those systems can fall within the Part L commissioning requirements. Integrio holds the records; the procedure comes from your commissioning plan.

Can we build an EV charger commissioning checklist?

+

Yes. Build it once in the Form Builder with fields for the charge point's serial and model, the checks and test results your procedure and the manufacturer require, photos and signatures, using radio buttons, dropdowns, text, image uploads and signature capture. Save it as a template and attach it to every charger on the next project. Integrio records the commissioning; it is not a charge point management back office.

Does it work offline?

+

Yes. Forms are fully usable offline in the mobile app. Everything is saved on the device and syncs to the cloud automatically when a connection is restored, which suits roofs, plant rooms, car parks and basements.

Can the client or a witness sign off?

+

Yes. Sign-off forms capture a digital signature on the device, and sign-off workflows can require approval from several parties, such as the client, main contractor and inspector. You can also send any form as an external link that can be completed in a browser without logging in.
