What should a battery storage commissioning checklist include?

It should cover the system details and class, an inspection of equipment, protection, location and labelling, references to the BS 7671 tests (with fault current checked in every operating mode), function tests of controls, alarms, charge-discharge, thermal, ventilation and fire systems, and grid tests: loss of mains, export limitation and back-up changeover.

Last updated . Facts checked on 30 September 2026 against MCS: MIS 3012 Issue 1.0, The Battery Standard.

Who uses it

The commissioning engineer on a commercial battery or solar-plus-storage job, one record per storage system.

When

After installation and before handover, and again when a battery system is extended or its controls are changed.

In Integrio

Build it once in the Form Builder (Office User), attach it to projects, and your team fills it in on iOS or Android, offline if needed.

From the field

How do you get the most from a battery storage commissioning checklist?

01

Test fault current in every mode

A battery changes the fault current and loop impedance depending on whether it's charging, discharging or islanded. One set of readings taken with everything running isn't enough.

02

Record the class before you start

An all-in-one packaged unit and a bespoke system with parts from three manufacturers need different amounts of checking. Setting the class first tells the engineer how deep to go.

03

Prove changeover under load

If the system provides back-up, pull the supply with the essential loads running and watch what switches, what sheds and how long it takes. That's the moment the customer will one day rely on.

04

Keep the manufacturer's report with yours

Most battery makers have their own commissioning app or report. Attach it to the same record so warranty claims have the serials, settings and your test results together.

Frequently asked questions

What do people ask about the battery storage commissioning checklist?

Ask our team →

What does MCS require when commissioning a battery?

+

MIS 3012 says the storage system is commissioned to a documented procedure and gives a model checklist based on Section 12 of the IET Code of Practice, used in addition to BS 7671 certification. Earth fault loop impedance and prospective fault current must be verified for all operating modes.

Does MIS 3012 cover commercial battery systems?

+

MIS 3012 covers storage systems for permanent buildings up to 50 kW, connected behind the supply meter. In-front-of-meter, off-grid and UPS systems are out of its scope. The IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems covers dwellings, commercial and industrial installations.

Sources: MCS: MIS 3012 Issue 1.0, The Battery Standard, IET: Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems, 3rd Edition

Does PAS 63100 apply to commercial battery storage?

+

PAS 63100:2024 sets fire safety requirements for small-scale storage systems in domestic dwellings. MCS notes the 3rd Edition IET Code of Practice says it should be considered. For a commercial site, work to the Code of Practice and the manufacturer's instructions, and record the fire safety checks on this form.

Is this battery storage commissioning checklist free?

+

Yes. Use the questions in your own format, or set them up in Integrio as a testing form on each battery system.

How do I use this template in Integrio?

+

Build it once in the Integrio Form Builder, which is on the Office User plan (£65 per user per month), and attach it to the battery product so each system gets the same record with its serials. Engineers fill it in on the mobile app on the Field Service User plan (£15 per user per month), offline if needed.
